Watching the Mouth… hearing its voice….
Among the municipal areas of Ragusa and Scicli near the coast, there is one of the rare examples in Sicily of Marine Protected Nature Reserve, where the flora and fauna are preserved and safeguarded in their integrity. I’m talking about the Macchia Foresta Reserve of the Irminio River, an area of about 130 hectares not far from Marina di Ragusa and Donnalucata.
The area includes the mouth of the river Irminio – the longest river in the province of Ragusa – which after a distance of about 52 kilometers, from the slopes of Monte Lauro, flows into the Mediterranean Sea.
The result obtained on a naturalistic and landscape level is surprising.
When you take the natural path that leads to the mouth, you immediately feel that you are facing a unique landscape in the Sicilian environment.
You will face literally a wild place maintained in its integrity, in which man – paradoxically – is kept on the side.
It is impossible not to notice the growing trees leaning on each other close to the coast or on the dunes, whose vastness extends as far as the eye can see;
It is impossible not to notice birds of all species hovering in the air and nesting on the wooded areas close to the beach.
Finally, it is impossible not to notice, walking here and there around the mouth, the presence of nutria, especially introduced within the reserve.

All of this, in my heart, gives me a profound trust and hope in the future.
So it is true, it is true that here and there in the world something is still maintained as it is, in the integrity and respect of every single element that makes up and makes perfect “The whole”.
And so, as I write this article I think about the song of Pierangelo Bertoli … Do you know it?
The lyrics, translated, sound like this:
“… And yet the wind still blows
spray water to ships on the prow
and whispers songs in the leaves
he kisses the flowers, he kisses them and he does not catch them … ”
